Black Walnut
Scientific name: Juglans nigra
Height: 60-70’
Width: 50-70’
Growth rate: fast
Habitat: Prefers moist, well-drained sandy to loam soils and full sunlight.
Black walnut is wood is very valuable for fine furniture making and veneer. The tree produces large nuts enclosed in a thick shell surrounded by a thick green husk. The husk contains a dye that will stain sidewalks, skin and permantly stain clothing. Black walnut produces a substance that inhibits the growth of many other species, includiing some ornamentals and garden vegetables. Black walnut is a host plant for the caterpillar of the long-tailed luna moth.
